Souter is retiring

Supreme Court Justice Souter is going to retire, and Obama is going to get his first chance to affect the court. Souter turned out to be quite different from what Bush I and the Republicans expected, so appointing a liberal judge won't make that much of a difference in the court, I think.

Obama gets his chance, but whoever he nominates will get a scrutiny like none other. Feel sorry for his nominees

I do. I feel sorry for them all. I think there are a lot of people who would be excellent to have working in government that won't even consider it because the scrutiny is so terrible, and usually so petty.

At least we've gotten over the idea of marijuana use as a major obstacle. My whole generation would pretty much be ineligible if that were the case. But, then again, that would have spared us Bush. And left us with maybe 1000 candidates for president.

I think that is the saddest part and wonder whether that is also the reason that we got such a poor selection of candidates for President in the last election? I am almost certain there has to be potential candidates who were much better than Obama, Clinton and McCain for example. I was also sorry that Caroline Kennedy withdrew her candidacy as Governor (was that Masachusetts)? I think that was for the same reason. Her candidacy became like a circus. :(

I was glad when Caroline Kennedy withdrew. She just acted weird about the whole thing it seemed to me. I never thought she came off as even "friendly" unless she was talking to someone like Oprah.

It's honestly not going to change much. It's just going to be a liberal president replacing a liberal judge. Don't expect any landmark rulings form this one guys.

Now id be interested to see the fighting we'd see if somebody like Alito or Scalia steps down.

I thought the available candidates on the Democratic side were pretty good. I like both Clinton and Obama. The Republicans were pathetic.

Caroline Kennedy lives on Long Island, and was hoping the governor of New York would appoint her to fill the seat Clinton was leaving.

But, yeah, I think we over scrutinize the wrong things, and it keeps people from running. Of course, look what John Edwards got away with during the campaign.

Both Clinton and Obama had very little prior exposure to international negotiations. Obama was very untried. I think his naivety in certain matters (that also seems to be endearing to many) is good in a sentimental way, but not always great in a professional way.

You know I felt the same way about the Democrats. But I thought maybe I could deal with Clinton. But it turned out worse than I feared. And Clinton folded like a cheap lawn chair. And drug poor old Bill along with her.

Heck I would rather see John Edwards in place of the one we're stuck with. Ol Bill had women problems and still did pretty well I guess.
