As many states continue to look at bleak budgets, the debate over how to (or whether to) tax online retailers such as Amazon continues to grow. We have seen the detriment it can cause though in the case of California's policy which has led to Amazon closing their affiliate program in the state.
There are a couple questions at play- one being how to tax these retailers if they have no physical property in said state (which is a jurisdictional question) and whether it is a good idea. In addition, Amazon might hurt some local retailers who have to charge taxes on goods, which automatically drives up the cost and pushes consumers to the online retailers.
Any thoughts on this one?
