the "1%" mantra is based on envy.

The president knows that if you appeal to people's baser instincts (greed, envy, jealousy) you are bound to get some traction. don't inspire people to do better, instead tell them that those that have, should not have.

"if you do less, I can feel that I am doing more".

That's true only to a point. The guy swing a hammer building the new skyscraper for some Wall St. fat cat does a hell of a lot more then said fat cat. The 1% vs. 99% argument is overused but there is truth to it.

Whether or not you like the rhetoric, the complete other side in the tea party seems to be using it too now, so that probably tells us it works well politically on a general scale...

The difference between the two is pretty vague.

Hardly, the American left is split almost 50/50 between Orwellians (not to be confused with his satire) and Dem-socialists. The 1st flat out reject Marxist thinking and communism while the other advocates market socialism maintaining capitalist institutions and repurposing them toward socialist goals (think Scandinavia). Marxism and revolutionary socialism in general has never been popular with the American Left as demonstrated by it's almost McCarthyist opposition to the Soviet Union (conveniently ignored by the American Right).

Not a single one of them is liberal though. Conservative parties seem to be more liberal

The TP is a (classical) liberal reaction to the neo-con (also not conservative, they're fascists) wing of the Republican party. Both claim to be conservative, the TP because they buy their own propaganda and the neo-cons because it's PC. People like Jeb are actual conservatives but most of their like have defected to the Dems over the past 4 years. The modern Republican Party is far right while the modern Democratic Party is center-right with a left leaning progressive wing.

America as a whole is center-right socially with unrealized (Cold War propaganda still works) socialist leanings economically.

Neo cons aren't fascists, not by a long shot. The democrats are progressives, they aren't even close to center. The right end needs to ditch the "religious right" because they are just progressives that have hijacked the party.

I'm a classical liberal. The closest party to my ideals is the republican party.

Limited government, low taxes, personal freedom, ect. are liberal positions. The only thing the TP are conservative on is social issues. They're not vary articulate though.

Neo-cons are hard line nationalists, corporatists and jingoists. They believe that the state should have a heavy hand in how business is done and that the profit motive must be encouraged and harnessed for the good of the state. That's fascism. What they're not is Nazis but that's not the same thing.
