That's the local church then, within your country. Because in the US and Australia, the Catholic schools have sex education as part of their curriculum. I knew a woman who taught physical education and health in a Catholic school in Australia, and she was responsible for sex education, too. She said the rationalization was that in order to not practice any of the forbidden forms of birth control, the students must understand them thoroughly.

In the US, this is one area where the church is pretty much totally ignored. They sort of wink-wink condone it, actually.
Well... I can say that sex education is optional to schools. I remember sometime in high school that we are taught about it. It was mainly included on our Health subject. But there's no subject like this on public schools.

I think it's not right to have them skip this subject because most of the students here are studying at public schools.

I can tell you things have moved forward. When I was about 12 to 15 years old the girls had two days of "sex education" They watched a "film" about reproduction on that 2nd day. The boys were sent to the gym for a extra P. E. class. Girls were told not to talk to us about anything they did in that class. Of course we were already talking to them about sex anyway. Not much luck but we were working them hard. We did not know much about sex, but thought we were more than ready for it.:D

The Pope speaking against them does have a measurable effect though. I thought a survey had been done after an archbishop had made similar statements against condoms. The main point is that it just doesn't help the situation. It also puts some more religious areas (like South and Central America...if I recall correctly) into jeopardy.
If the Pope has had an effect on people from Southern Africa, it would only have been to the extent of people trying to convince them otherwise, and now the Pope has justified what they always had been convinced off. But only a small percentage though. Possibly in South America the impact would have been much more as the percentage catholics is that much higher.

Unfortunately most school systems get around to sex education way too late. I've read that now the most typical age for a first sexual experience in the US is 14. So you really need to do sex education much earlier.

One of the major problems in South Africa is that they had an equally foolish prime minister who insisted that HIV had nothing to do with AIDS, and so there was no need to worry about the rising level of HIV infection in the country.

Add to all of this a preference for 'dry sex', and the widely held belief that sex with a virgin will cure you, and there really isn't a lot of hope there.

So I doubt that the impact of the Pope's statement will be very great in southern Africa . However, having the stupidity broadcast around the world will, I'm afraid.
