How can the two be compared however? At the time when Britain started the NHS most of its primary health care centres were Government owned. In the US it is privately owned. It would take a massive investment not only in terms of money, but also shifting paradigms politically, to socialize the medical system in the United States. Funds that the United States don't have either, given that it is going through a nasty recession right now. I can't understand why political energy in Washington is not completely focussed on the economy in every sense of the word. Right now jobs for people should be the highest priority. Once the economy and jobs can be fixed, then they can start with a significant change as the one envisaged by Obama. It would however have to work with what is available, i.e. privately owned primary health care centres, which is completely different to what the UK had when the NHS was founded. In essence what I am saying, Americans should find their own unique solution, the UK one may work for the UK, but it may not be the right solution for Americans.

Right, Americans fled from Europe because they wanted something different, so probably will need to find their own unique solutions. I just get the feeling that although they want something better than they have in their current healthcare system, the health care industry is too multi-faceted for one solution (one size fits all) to be found that will make everyone happy. Almost like check for now, and maybe check mate, this time round.
