Notice when they talk about Bush they never mention the democrats had the House and Senate the last couple of years he was in.
That is a really good point Dodge. I have not thought about it, and it has not been widely discussed, but right on the number. To Bush's advantage however must have been that the Democrats aren't a simple up and down party, they have leftists, rightists and a real mixture of guys moving in different directions. So far Obama has been lucky to have had them behind him, but I'm almost certain his speech at West Point about Afghanistan was a turning point as a number of his own party had already been unhappy about his right centre status quo policies and they now have been finally convinced that he sold them out and is following a Bush policy. He perhaps thought he had them placated with the 2012 return of troops undertaking, but one can probably bluff your way for only so long, sooner or later people begin to wake up. His honeymoon has to be over and what he does now is probably going to really make or break him.
I agree with you about him being totally into his own ego, the speech at West Point for me underlined that too, when he must have thought that his usual speech magic will make everyone happy.
