I remember the news touting that it had been down to around 27 or so, which due to a short warming spell...was colder than Anchorage and Greenland for that day.
One observer reported a temperature of -79 before the thermometer battery failed. The actual temperature probably fell below -80 and broke a record low for the United States. I've been in -40 degree weather. Compared to -79, it was jacket weather.
