Zimbabwe president Robert Mugabe is having a big birthday party for himself today despite his people suffering from a cholera outbreak and massive hyperinflation. It is really a sad story and really shows how selfish he is. This is the problem with having leaders that have too much power- they end up hurting the people.

Well...Mugabe's really just an self serving idiot. It's just unfortunate that he happened to become a dictator. He might as well live it up now though. I give him another year or so before there's a coup/invasion/assassination.

I don't even think he'll last that long with the way things are going. I am expecting a regime change sometime this year unless he really changes his ways and starts to solve the country's problems- I doubt he will though and even if he tries it might be too late now.

Africa is hopeless. I thought so when I traveled through (bottom to top, and all the way across) in 1984, and I still think so. There are some basic cultural differences that I think can't be overcome. There is extreme tribal loyalty that overrides everything, a seeming need for a 'big man' leader, and a passivity that is truly depressing. South Africa, Botswana, and Namibia are probably the only ones with any chance of being successful nations. The rest will be like Somalia and the Sudan, not really nations but a collection of tribes and warlords. It's a continent that is, essentially, undevoloping.

Things have gotten better in a few places, but the continent is generally on a razor's edge. Things tend to go to hell pretty quick over there.

The worst part is the lack of a good uniting force though. South Africa has made some strides toward a peaceful union, but there are just too many warlords and dictators for anything to stick. It always seems to come down to a matter of picking the lesser evil too.

I just read a book by a man who went back after having lived there in the 60's, and he thought it had gotten much worse.

Nothing, as far as I can tell from the news, has improved except that apartheid has ended. Almost every country is worse off economically than it was in the 60's. Universities are closing, AIDS has been devastating, and countries that I traveled in are now totally unsafe, like Zaire (back to being called the Congo), and Zimbabwe. The trip I took is no longer possible.
