Anyone else in the path of Irene? Been preparing today/yesterday- got water, food, filled up on gas, etc. Going to be an interesting few days, hopefully the damage isn't too great...

I wish you and everyone else in the path of Irene the best. We are already being victimized around here by higher gas prices. Because the refineries "may" have some down time. Damn speculators!

I don't think those hikes are from the "speculators" that you are referring to- not necessarily any way. In a sense we are all speculators since we speculate on what will happen- the gas stations around town have been packed all day as people speculate on potential shortages later and buy up now. The demand can send price up (even if the speculators you are thinking about didn't even exist). Speculation is a part of markets (every market) and a part of judging value as well.
Thanks for the wishes though and I hope nothing bad happens either.

All I can say to NYC though is to take cover. The place is nothing but sky scrapers and a Cat 1 on the ground is a Cat 3 a few stories up. This thing is also 800 miles wide so the storm surge will be nasty, all the more so as most of the city is at or below seal level and built on islands. If Irene hits as a strong Cat 2 or higher NYC has a vary good chance of going the way of NO.
Maryland. Currently at my parents house which is about 30 miles from where the eye is supposed to pass through. Supposed to go back to school (near DC) tomorrow, but will probably have to hold that off until Monday.

You should be okay then but this is going to be a Cat 5 for the upper portions of NYC. Anything 50 floors up and higher is screwed and that's most of the city.
Well it died down faster than expected. A good thing for all- not too much damage around where I live and less than expected elsewhere from what I've read.
