Honesty is important in debate.
Besides, when you become known as a liar or one that engages in other acts of dishonesty, people lose credence in your words and no longer take you seriously.
And once you obtain that sort of reputation, it is extremely difficult to shed yourself of it. It follows you around and lingers for quite a long time.
