Love?

Is there a universal defintion for love? Is there a feeling that can be applied to all who are in love? Or is it completly diffrent for all people, something that must be identified by that person as his or her feelings of love, that he himself must decide on.

In my opinion there are many degrees of "love". And only that person will know how much they love that person. And they can make some mistakes knowing for sure.;)

How would anyone know the "feelings" of someone else. I know what I consider as love. But have little idea how that would match up with someone else.

I imagine, that depending on your gender it differs, same goes for your age but if two people were of the same age experience and gender then they would love and experience love depending on the response of the partner the same way.

I don't think love is something you can define. We all look at it differently.
It can't be just a feeling, I know that for sure. Love drives you to do things, love changes you, love makes you do crazy things at times. I guess if we go into specifics, it's completely different for each person, because we all think differently. One may think making breakfast for you is a way to show you care, others may think it's not. At the end of the day, I personally think when you love someone, you just know it, you don't have to question it, you don't have to second guess it, it's just there.

I think it's different for each person. I am lucky to have found true love, a one in a billion girl that perfectly complements me and I her and the feelings she produces are simply incredible.

I don't think so, i think it is esoteric, definitly individual. We as observers can see signs of love, but we can't absolutly know for provable fact that people love each other, if we could i don't think there would be a such thing as devorice. Basically knowing if someone loves you reqires an ability people don't have. The ability to know what others are thinking.

Explaining love to someone who never experianced it would be like explaining red to someone who is colorblind. Without experiance, you can't know.

It is said that love is the greatest of all virtues; however given love’s transience, its claim to greatness is doubtful at best. Certainly, love in its purest form has virtue. True love is exemplified by selflessness, the rarest of all virtues; but there have been scarce few saints in this world, and most of them martyrs for the sake of goodness. For the rest of us lesser mortals, love is but an emotion - a rather selfish one at that; and while many would credit it more than its worth, as many have come to grief for it.

we all have the capability to be selfless martyrs, but lack the drive. I think that this "saintdom" of which some people associate with the notion of "better people" is completely created in their mind. As people those of us that don't reach greatness, we only see what we can't do, not what we have done. We have a tendency to "through the baby out with the bath water". If you don't think you can and do make a difference in this world than you are correct. But if you ignore the naysayers and know you can make a difference then you already have.

Wherever the world takes me
As far as I know there's no really plausible definition of love since the difference between someone who is experiencing "love" and someone who merely feels loyalty and adoration for another person is entirely a matter of degree. For this reason you have the word "love" being thrown around by a lot of different people in either a very willy-nilly fashion or in such a way that the word maintains a huge amount of reverence. For this reason it really is one of those words that is entirely up for each of us to define for ourselves. There can be no yardstick in terms of human emotions when we’re dealing with force or power of an emotion rather than a type of emotion.

Love is a chemical reaction in the brain designed to facilitate mating and family bonds.

Wherever the world takes me
Not quite that simple...

Are you kidding? Have you ever tried to seduce a woman with the sensual and heartfelt pickup line: Girl, due to a series of uncontrollable chemical reactions in my brain I've become thoroughly attached to you in such a way that if a predator attacks us then I might try to save you.
Women love that.

Don't get me wrong, there is certainly a physiological driver behind love, but David's implication that it is a single reaction or one that was consciously driven by family bonds and mating is misleading.

Saying there is a scientific measurement that can be detected when someone is in love is not the.definition of it. What non erotic love, say love you have for a brother.

What I'm saying is that the common characteristics of love are fairly easy to label, but the only thing which seperates love from friendship or camaraderie is the intensity of the feeling, not the traits of the emotion itself.

All feelings have a physiological driver, albeit in most cases a complex one.
