I do not think there should be special laws that apply to a hate crime ( especially bad punishments ) just laws that that apply to the situation at hand

for example if a white neo nazi curb stomped a african-american i dont think he deserves a worse punishment then if he curb stomped a white guy

If it is the same circumstance I agree the punishment should be the same. But if the white guy went "hunting" for a black guy to stomp he should get a little something extra.

Hate crimes ARE worthy of special treatment. If I go bash a guy just because he is black/gay/muslim/croatian/whatever group that is a crime that might not have occurred otherwise, and it is a particularily invalid motive for a violent crime. You only need to look at countries where hate crimes are endemic to see where failing to nip that kind of behavior in the bud can lead to.

You only need to look at countries where hate crimes are endemic to see where failing to nip that kind of behavior in the bud can lead to.

We imprison per capita, the most inmates in the world, second is Russia, and then Rwanda.

What we need is to end the war on drug users, up the war on drug suppliers, incarcerate you (j/k), and then make prisons expensive. It is the capitalist way. I guarantee that if it costs more to incarcerate, imprisonment will dissipate. I have been in prison (Angola, 1968, so I think I have perspective on this). It is simply a vacation to those that are most loathed by society, and a nightmare to those that are caught up in the treadmill. To send more petty offenders to harsher sentences is insane.

I don't really have much to say on this subject right now. I see nothing wrong with "chain gangs" as long they are used for actual work and not "abuse". We have prisoners that work picking up trash on the roads and maybe a little weed-whacking. But they ask for that instead of sitting in jail for weeks or months.

Of course we will never see our biggest crooks working beside the road. They are too busy trying to get reelected.
