Why do many people like to be Obama?

After Barack Obama makes history as the first African-American Presidnt of the US and won the US elections last year, many people want to become like him. Something like an underdog winning a boxing match. But I can't understand why.

There are politicians here who call themselves "the next Obama." One of them is Jejomar Binay, a Mayor of Makati, Philippines. He want to run for presidential position on the 2010 National Elections and there's also a female politician who call herself, "the female Obama."

What are your thoughts about this?

The big thing is that Obama marketed himself as a politician of the people. He did a good job at it too, especially since he wasn't really that different. I particularly liked the joke that, "I never thought I'd see the day when a Harvard graduate from Hawaii could become president" .

He did do a lot of good stuff though. He was incredibly innovative and effective in his campaigning. He ran an online game that let campaigners earn points for campaigning for him (worthless points too). It made the whole thing fun and really let him connect with the younger generation. This grassroots style let him gain a lot of popular support and get people excited about the election. Simply put, he really was a nice change from the usual politicians we see wheeled out in front of us.

The Parakeet makes some good points. Another factor is probably that people are seeing that the world can change and that things that were impossible in the past are becoming possible now. I think it was a huge step having an African-American President and people now see that doors are opening. It's a pretty inspirational thing and with inspiration comes those willing to "step up" so to speak.

You know, I never really did get that about politicians. How they want to be a 'man' of the people.' I personally don't want a regular "Joe the Plumber" to be presdent. Hell no, I wan't somebody better than me, smarter than me to lead the country.

Yeah his campaign staff was brilliant. The internet is an incredible tool and the DNC has it locked down. Obviously, I expect things to change in the next election cycle, as the GOP is playing catch up. Problem is, there is so few youth in the GOP compared to the Dems and the youth that is there, aren't anywhere near as excited as the Dems were.

Although Palin helped, it's sad that it took somebody like her to raise enthusiasm.

In my opinion one Obama is more than enough. If we were lucky he would move there. I hope this does not happen to you. He makes me sad and hopeless when he speaks.

I can say that there's only one and only Obama. Maybe you can see him as an inspiration. What I hate is the fact that there are many politicians who named themselves as the new or another Obama just to win the election. Do you think we will have CHANGE?

I think the only change we get will be trillions more of debt and the government trying to run everyone and everything here.

And no Obama is no inspiration to me. No more "inspiration" than having terrible neighbors move next door. You just can't wait for them to move. And I look forward to seeing him move on and get out of my life.

I agree. The Obama product spun by his campaigners really enthrawed the nation. Hell, I knew enough about him to know some of it was spin, and I was all "I really hope he lives up to the hype." And I do. I want this nation to succeed. And if he does live up to all the empty promises, wouldn't that be great. But Parakeet is right, he won by being able to see the future and use media (not necessary the news media, but they played their part also) that haven't been full used before. It was like JFK vs Nixon on the first TV debates.

As far as people being like Obama, I don't know. Its nice to be inspired by a message, but usually inspiration becomes the foundation of action. So far I've not seen anything of the sort. I hope this changes. (I didn't mean that as a pun). Now if Obama does something marvelous in the first four years, THEN I could see "The Next Obama" label. So far the man hasn't done anything other than be a charismatic speech giver.

Anyway that's my view one things... and why is this thread in History?

My interpretation and understanding is that it's just a way to advertise themselves. Obama is obviously now extremely well known and by suggesting they are similar some people may just be inclined to vote for them for the fact "well, they're like Obama. Why not?" type.

I came to think of it just now, maybe you are right. But what I think is that they don't have originality. Maybe like a pirated version

Now that you mentioned advertising themselves, do you think it will help them in gaining more votes in the coming election?

I didn't vote for President Obama, but I don't wish him ill will. I don't agree with his policies at all, but I do hope for the best. I mean you kind of have to in this current crisis. I hope for him to be a little less like FDR (well alot less) and more like Regan... But that's just wishful thinking.

I will support him "if" I think he is right. But I will not ever support anyone pulling some of the "stunts" this dude is pulling. He seems to believe his own press from the campaign trail.

Unfortunately he's turning to be the biggest socialist yet. But that's not even my biggest problem. A lot of people don't realize the second biggest disgrace: Nancy Pelosi.

Guess Obama has not been around for long enough yet to be able to really make a good judgment of his Presidency. I have criticism of some of his actions, including his Nuclear Speech, and his bail-out package. I am also not for socialism as that of course goes hand in hand with more Government, more regulations, more interference.

Barack Obama, is number very young. he has a charisma about him that most politicians have lost in their old age. The next thing is being the first African eastern president has given people hope for change.

So that's why people like him in my opinion.
