I just signed these...as I do indeed see the WBC as a hate group, and about as far from the teachings of Christ as you can get.

"
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Thousands have signed two separate petitions that would classify Topeka’s Westboro Baptist Church as a hate group and strip it of its tax exempt status. The petitions were started after members of Westboro announced plans to protest a Sunday vigil in Newtown, Conn.
After Westboro Baptist Church spokesperson Shirey Phelps-Roper tweeted plans to protest the vigil, “to sing praise to God for the glory of his work in executing his judgement,” the hacktivist group known as “Anonymous” threatened the church via video. In it, an automated voice says, “We will not allow you to corrupt the minds of America with your seeds of hatred. We will not allow you to inspire aggression to the social faction which you deem inferior. We will render you obsolete. We will destroy you. We are coming.”

Send them to Pakistan so they can see what their hate brings. That or just shoot them.

Sounds like something the Westboro church would say.

Na, they'd just say "God Hates ___" and run away when the biker gangs show up.

Also BS argument. Reminds me when people call terrorists cowards after they launch a full frontal assault on a major target or when they tell other people to 'now lower themselves to their level'. The moral high horse is a farce and it's far too easy to be unhorsed to try riding it. ;)

Well I thought you were joking (I think), so I was responding in jest too. But if you were serious, then my comment coincidentally works seriously too and in that case I don't think saying something against "just shoot them" is really morally pretentious. Is it a high ground to think people shouldn't be shot without conviction, fair trial, and court punishment? (and even then I don't know where I stand on capital punishment :p)

Though I don't like Westboro views in the least and they go against everything I teach and have learned over the years. Are they a hate group I guess that is debatable. The reason I say this is because it is there view and there teaching however despicable it is. If you did this then in reality Pastor Wright's Church would have to be deemed a hate group too. You walk a fine line when you tread on a person's right to freedom of expression, speech, and religion no matter how asinine that view in any of those categories are to us.

I mean really I don't like the KKK's view in the least but they have that right to that view. You truly tread on thin ice when it comes to things like this. You do this to Westboro even though they have a hateful doctrine people set themselves up for it to happen to them. if this does happen you give atheist the fire power they need to start to do the same to other religious organizations. Be careful what you ask for.

Homophobic preachers like Fred Phelps are not true Christians; and their so-called ministries make a mockery of religion. They are like the "ranters" (pious frauds) in John Bunyon’s The Pilgrim’s Progress. It would be ironic if Jesus actually turned out to be a homosexual. Certainly, Christ’s message of universal love cannot be true unless it embraces all mankind and not just a few self-righteous bigots.

I agree with you on everything you said about Phelps. Though I believe he is allowed to preach how he wants and people who follow are allowed to follow him. I may dislike what he says and how he preaches but he has that right just like everyone else.

Yes he does teach the exact opposite of Christ's teachings and on day he will answer for that but not to us.

Though if you take his version of his religion no matter how asinine that is you step on a slippery slope. I believe then all other religions would then be contested for their tax exemption and may lose it if Phelps church loses his. Catholics, Protestants, Baptists, could all follow Phelps down the same path.

He may be an idiot to most people but he has the right to have his view and people who are contesting his church better step back and think of the implications of their action, because one day soon it may be their church under fire for its tax exempt status.

I watched a couple of programmes about these people, Loius Theroux interviewed and followed them for a while to see their day to day life. They give religion a bad name!
Sad to see the children indoctinated...they could hardly be old enough to know what their banners and chants mean.

Oh I agree they do give religion a very bad name. Though for those who lump them in with all religious people are wrong in doing so.

The man in my book is a bigoted moron no doubt about that, but he has that right to be that bigoted moron whether I agree or not. I may not like the hate he spews but he has that right which I must respect even if he is a moron.

I think if you're displaying hate more than any other concept you shouldn't be a religion. Westboro does nothing but act a nuisance, get on everyone's nerves, and expel hate. WHy does anyone believe this is a religion and not a hate group? Get serious.

I frankly despise the Westborough baptist church and everything they stand for. I think they are idiots zealots and hateful pathetic excuses for human beings.

They are far from Christians but they are just pathetic mouth pieces, the say what they are told to by their lunatic pastor and they completely ignore biblical teachings.

If they worship their creator inside of a building technically they are a church.

Though when you take that right away from another person then you open the door to have your rights stripped from you if someone does not like something you do.

Though they spew hate that is all it is and they have that right and to try and take it away from them is wrong because they have the same rights as us.

There are other ways to counter such people other then to try and take their freedom of religion and speech away.

They are a church, or more of a cult. The fact is that they can't just keep going around to soldiers funerals and saying outrageous things like " god loves dead soldiers" and "thank god for the sandy shooting". Someone needs to give them a firm talking too.

Yet they can it is their right. We may not like it but hey that is what our country is based on. The day that right gets fully taken away we know we the people never stopped the monster from spreading.

Yes...they have the right to spew whatever is legal, they do not deserve the special treatment we give a church.

Yes they do despite what you may think they come to worship God however perverted the reason. Again you strip them of their right to worship you essentially are take religious freedom and tossing it out the window.

Satanism as long as they abide by the law is a religion and no matter whether we agree with the practices or not they are covered under the freedom of religion.

Aggain you enter a part where if you take it from the Westboro Church it can be taken from any Church. So basically your are installing Communist Doctrine in the U.S..

Except Satanism isn't a hateful religion. Quite the opposite actually, they're all about being happy with life.

Try another analogy?

It is in the eyes of the beholder now isn't it. Muslim is not a hateful religion either but yet people make it out to be. So there is no need for another analogy.

It makes no difference if they say hateful comments as a individuals or as a group they have that right. Yet they still worship God in a sanctuary. What they say is completely different then worshipping. The failure is people are not looking at the difference.

The are not at the funeral's to worship God but to make a statement which is there right last time I looked.

They have the right to make whatever statement they wish...free country and all. We have the right to do so as well.

My statement is that they are not a Church, they are a hate group.
