Iraq veteran and ex-US Navy seal Chris Kyle, known as the deadliest sniper in US history, has been shot dead on a Texas shooting range, reports say.

His body was found at Rough Creek Lodge range on Saturday with that of another man. A suspect was arrested.

Mr Kyle, 38, wrote the 2012 bestseller American Sniper, about the psychology of a sniper, in which he said that he had killed more than 250 people.

He served four tours of duty in Iraq and was decorated for bravery.

The gunman opened fire at about 15:30 local time (21:30 GMT) then fled in a pick-up truck belonging to one of the victims, local media reported.

Erath County Sheriff Tommy Bryant said the motive for the killings was unclear, and was unable to explain how the two men were shot.

But he said a 25-year-old suspect was detained five hours later more than 70 miles (110 km) from the scene.

Scott McEwen, who co-authored the book with Kyle, said: "It just comes as a shock and it's staggering to think that after all Chris has been through, that this is how he meets his end, because there are so many ways he could have been killed."

'The Devil'
Mr Kyle, a former cowboy, is regarded as the most prolific sniper the US has ever seen.

Official Pentagon figures say he killed 160 people, but he estimated the total was 255.

According to army intelligence, he was nicknamed "The Devil" by Iraqi insurgents, who put a $20,000 (£13,000) bounty on his head.

He appeared to show little remorse for his victims.

"Every person I killed I strongly believe that they were bad," he told the BBC in an interview a year ago.

"When I do go face God there is going to be lots of things I will have to account for but killing any of those people is not one of them."

"It is a weird feeling, seeing an actual dead body... knowing that you're the one that caused it now to no longer move”

Chris Kyle

Mental illness, un-treated, takes two more lives.

I pray for all concerned in this tragedy. Sad, so very sad.

Kyle had taken two former soldiers with PTSD to a Texas shooting range as a therapy and one of them ended up shooting at him and perhaps the shooter had a flashback and he lost control of himself when he took hold a gun. Kyle wrote in his memoir that he would not go out for a week to meet with people after returning from deployment to prevent acting weirdly in public and he should have been aware of the risk he was taking while mentoring PTSD patients.

After a public backlash, former presidential candidate Ron Paul used his Facebook page to clarify controversial comments he made Monday about the Navy SEAL who was killed at a Texas gun range over the weekend. On Monday, Paul, 77, took cyber heat for a tweet he sent out following the news of the veteran's death. Paul wrote: “Chris Kyle’s death seems to confirm that ‘he who lives by the sword dies by the sword.’ Treating PTSD at a firing range doesn’t make sense.”

This is very much indicative of our blaze attitude of mental illness. Not sure why we a people ignore it. Oh wait I almost forgot we ignore it because we use these poor souls to give the gun control business fodder.

Its sad that the many soldiers that have committed suicide are forgotten about or used for the current political movement, same with the children killed at sandy hook.

Our tendency to point the finger at this or that scapegoat is one of the main problems with or nation.

I really wish e could talk about really fixing the problems with out society rather than being detracted by nonsense politics.

Really, our attorney general would never permit criminals from Mexico to purchase guns and kill our citizens and lie about out and then get of Scott free... Um wait that didn't happen did it?

The dictators unfit for third world despots in our political machine are one of the many causes for our unraveling culture.

Surly no person claiming to be a reverend who harbored a man who raped his own daughter and blamed it on a cop, would be considered a civil rights leader. Surly a despot dictator that murdered hundreds of thousands of people in south America wouldn't be silk screened onto tee shirts and handbags and part of the popculture in our nation. Surly men running for president would not have spoken terrible things of or military. Certainly dopes that are part of a so-called "church" would protest at funerals of fallen military personnel would be clubbed by police verses being protected by them. Definitely a man who sings a song with lyrics as fallows "I got 99 problems but a (derogatory term for women also a female dog) ain't one." Wouldn't be invited to the white house.

Surly a guy with two ounces of dried up grass on him wouldn't spend five years locked up to be raped stabbed and beaten up by the most vicious of people, and a famous singer caught with three times as much gets off Scott free for a private song with a judge. That same guy that was beaten and raped in jail could go and earn a living after serving his five years.

I could go on and on and on, but we ignore all of this because the answers are not as simple as a knee jerk reaction to ban this or that.

Our culture is eroding, because Americans are just do busy being divided and opinionated.

It's eroding here too due soley to pussy-footing around and making efforts not to upset some groups.
Recently an MP spoke up about prison life being altered a little by removing Sky TV, introducing prison uniform etc and asked why prisoners should have the benefits that law abiding citizens work hard to obtain and often are unable to afford. How true.
Law abiding people should have 'rights' Criminals should lose ALL rights as soon as they are convicted no matter what the crime.

Yeah, the groups have managed to destroy many things, also our tendency to sue.

Its also eroding due to pandering to demands of certain people who do not and have no intention of integrating into our society.

That is an issue here also. Also certain interest groups have no intention to compromise.

True Dat......the NRA is adamant that nothing be done.

I was thinking more along the line of the TSA not obeying the constitution.

verses the NRA supporting it. Their should be no compromise on rights.

Also....the Center for Limiting Agreement on Xtremeism, seems unwilling to compromise in the least.

On rights, of course I won't. Compromising on the restriction of rights us anti liberty.

I am for liberty, I guess I an an extremist for liberty, funny I would ever be called an extremist for supporting liberty, but the nation us in decline because people call pro liberty extremism.

Basically attitudes such as this are the problem, limp wrists and running away has taken the place of bravery and the will to make things better.

That is truly sad, I know you were trying to be funny but you came off as defeated

One last time...for the record:

What you refer to as "Rights", seem little more than your personal opinion of the way said rights are interpreted. We as a society do not allow individuals to bypass our laws simply because they disagree with them, any more than we can allow individuals to pick and choose what taxes they want to pay.
You wish to compromise the "Rights" of others based on your preferences, this is considered illegal. It would be similar to me deciding to walk into your home and take your personal belongings because I wanted them.

You are so incredibly backward. First off there is only one meaning to the second amendment, and its the one written in plain English that an eight year old could understand.

We do that all the time tecoyah, we allow the court to bypass law continually.

There is no interference with others rights of I have fifteen bazookas in my closet. You are advocating people going into homes and taking things.

You don't even realize your total hypocrisy, that is exactly the problem with this nation.

And you wonder why others react in a negative way to you?

Anyway, lets just do as you seem to suggest and look at the "Plain English"...shall we?

Amendment II

A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.

Now, as this is very clear and plain English, and it seems we must adhere to it as stated we must begin with the term militia:
"A militia (pron.: /mɨˈlɪʃə/),[1] or irregular army, generally refers to an army or other fighting force that is composed of non-professional fighters; citizens of a nation or subjects of a state or government that can be called upon to enter a combat situation, as opposed to a professional force of regular soldiers or, historically, members of the fighting nobility."

Therefore, we are referring here to an organized force of citizenry.

We then go on to explain this force must be allowed to bear arms.

So I suppose my question for you would be...Which Militia are you attached to, a part of, or in any way affiliated with?

Also, I did not note where it is stated disallowing certain arms equals an infringement with the right to bear arms...or did you simply decide this is implied?

No....you would never imply there are "Plain English" words in the 2nd that do not exist....that would be an interpretation.

I frankly don't care how you react to me, I prefer a negative reaction from you it lets me know I am on the right track.

The right of the PEOPLE to keep and bear arms must not be infringed, nothing about a malitia affiliation is necessary hence the usage of the word people.

People doesn't mean malitia, not sure what English you speak.

Disallowing ownership is taking away rights, I once had the right to own something, but the dictator in office is single handedly attempting to steal that right.

Banning guns is banning guns, of its just maga ultra death guns our what ever nonsense you wish to put on guns that scare you.

Banning guns is infringement on the PEOPLES right to keep and bear arms, I don't care what guns you ban its infringement period.

And to answer you silly question that had nothing to do at all with the second amendment...people don't have to be in a malitia to be "the people".

So try again, this time really read and understand the words written in the second amendment, and forget your bigotry for a moment and don't try to attempt to twist and fabricate meaning that supports your irrational fear/hatred of scary black guns.

I don't think u you are capable of being unbiased.
