Right, that certainly is cause for worry. All we need is for Iran and Pakistan to be in a state of war! That will probably minimize the gravity of the situation with the Taliban in Afghanistan by an enormous margin and completely change the dynamics of war in that area.

It's also in Israel's interest that Iran remain in the so-called "Axis of Evil". And as the Israel Lobby will tell you, what is in Israel's interest is always in the interests of the US.

Hillary Clinton and Obama have also acted quite firmly with Iran. Perhaps they have knowledge about Iran that we do not have, perhaps there is an element of truth about "Axis of Evil"?

The gov't is able to hold on to power because they can present us as an enemy. The moment we start acting nice, the gov't loses it's legitimacy. A theocratic gov't ruling a Western nation, it wouldn't take much to depose them.

Actually, to be honest, i think they're acting so "firmly" with Iran because they don't understand Middle Eastern politics.

To be truthful, I don't think the US matters as much to Iran as the US may think it does. Whether the US acts nicely or firmly do not really matter that much. Iran also now has an ally in Russia, so does not really have to worry about sanctions at all, anyway.

I'll actually explain that one, i've decided. Iran and Turkey have an understanding that Iran will sell Turkey oil - which will be damn handy considering the nature of oil (i.e. a finite fossil fuel). Also, Turkey has adopted a kind of middle man position between Iran and the West. Iran has recently requested Turkey as a mediator a lot.
