Birth control

Some religious leaders have stated contempt towards birth control/condoms and have told supporters not to use them. This has sometimes led to people having too many children and not being able to support them. What are your thoughts on this issue?

Personally, I would much rather have people use birth control/condoms than have to see a child suffer because they can't afford to properly feed/dress/educate him/her. Of course religious leaders always say abstinence is the better option in that case, but that is always easier said than done- not to mention that everyone has different personal opinions on the connection between sex and a relationship with the argument existing that sex is good for a healthy relationship.

The Pope also says that condoms won't help the AIDS issue in Africa and even went as far to say as it increases the problem. That was enough from him for me to see he's a complete idiot.

It's time religion gets with the times. Hell, they bend countless rules in their bible to suit the times now - I don't understand why it's the sex and homosexuality they can't seem to get past. Small-minded in my opinion. Suiting I suppose for the sheep that follow.

You'd think, seeing as the supposed basis of religion is peace and love, that they'd have better uses of their energy... like I dunno - helping poverty, war, etc. instead of worrying about sex outside of marriage, GLBT, and atheists.

Seems to me the religious leaders of the world would rather spread hate than love.

As for my personal opinions on birth control - I can see nothing wrong with it in the least. Of course abstinence is the only 100% sure-fire way to protect against unwanted pregnancy and STIs, but seriously, it's time to take a different approach.

I think moderate Christians should start a campaign:

"Thank God for condoms".

I think it's ridiculous that religious leaders ask their followers not to use condoms or birth control. From what I can see it has led to more sexualy transmitted infections as well as children being born to families that simply aren't physiologically ready or economically ready for a child.

I'm not sure if religious leaders even think about the long term problems that can be created by telling people to simply not do something they disagree with.

My main problem with religious people is that most of them are incredibly closed minded.

I see where you're going at. I'm sort of against most birth control (pills mostly), but condoms are necessary. AIDS drugs would help Africa quite a lot if it can be produced and shipped a bit more.

I am all for birth control. There is no shortage of babies. Just a shortage of homes for babies already here.

I think the pills are good. It gives women a bit more power.

In China, their in the process of developing birth control pills for men. It's been a while since I read the article but I think the basic idea is that it will stop sperm production. Seems pretty scary to me... would hate to be one of the test subjects haha.

Funny that you bring that up because I was just having a discussion about that with one of my friends. From what he told me, it just reduces the motility of sperm, so that it can not get to the egg to fertilize it. Still not something I'd want to be a test subject for though :p

I agree, It's scary to think of all these teenagers having kids when they do not have the money to support the children, they should have used some kind of preventative measure.

And MYP,

Birth control for men, why not just get a vasectomy?
haha =P

Absolutely. I still think that moderate Chritians should start a "thank God for condoms" campaign. It would really help to help young people understand how important it is.

Also, people need to protect themselves against STDs.

I presume the pill is temporary?

What do people think of this femidom thing, anyway?

Apparently they're a big pain.

I'd also virtually forotten about semi-permanent things like an implant or a coil.

We are living in a Malthusian nightmare; but there seems little that the world can (or will) do about it. Charles Darwin held out hope that man would evolve into a more perfect species, but feared that he was already doomed to self-destruction before getting there. Certainly, we are no better for following the Commandment to "Be fruitful and multiply. . . ." Genesis 1:28 (KJV). Ours has not been a history of good husbandry. Man may be master on this planet; but we are rapidly laying waste to the land and the sea upon which we depend for life's subsistence; for when this goes, then, surely as the earth turns, so shall we go also.

Well said, and even if we manage to survive all the damage on earth, wonder how habitable it would be if we continue along our current road of destruction, possibly we will not be able to enjoy the outdoors any longer, and be cooped up in artificial environments almost 100% of the time. People will then recall the good old days with great nostalgia when there were green grass and trees around.

Indeed. Once the oil and coal runs out and the need for all the propaganda is gone, people are going to be in for a shock as they realize they've strip-mined the entire planet.

I learned at religious school that it's against Jewish law to use anything that blocks the flow of sperm such as a condom. But I think birth control was fine...don't remember
