Washington D.C. recently enacted a 5 cent tax on each plastic bag taken at grocery stores. The move is to encourage citizens to bring their own bags and hence not use the non eco-friendly plastic bags.
How does everyone feel about the tax and do you think it is a good idea?
Can you say nickel and dimed to death? I think people will eventually just learn to accept this as a new "tax." Or they will repeal this after enough people complain.
Personally, we just save all the bags each time we get home form the groceries. They make for good trash can liners but it wouldn't be that big of a deal to just stick a few in the car. Or even those newer cloth ones that people are using.
Or even do it the way places like Sams Club and Costco do it. Just let people use the cardboard boxes all of these things come in. It's a great way to reuse the boxes and saves the store money as well.
They're phasing out plastic bags at the cooperative shop in my nearby town. It's nothing to do with Government legislation, it's because they tend to be very environmentally aware. They have large, strong, reusable recycled plastic bags and cloth bags. I have a few cloth bags at home, which i take in to use. They also don't rip.
Good idea. Those plastic bags are horrendous. I also think some of the packaging of frozen foods is excessive. First there is a box, then a plastic cover for three portions, and the three portions also covered with plastic. Perhaps that should be their next item on the agenda to focus on. Perhaps they can do without plastic inside boxes. Ideally put a ban on all non-biodegradable plastic.Washington D.C. recently enacted a 5 cent tax on each plastic bag taken at grocery stores. Well maybe they can remove the plastic around the box. Last night I opened a card box of tea. There was plastic around the outside of it, then the card box. Then four sections of aluminium foil wrapped tea in more cardboard containers.2 things. !. The stuff would fall out. :giggle: 2. The idea is usually to steam items, which is why you don't remove the plastic when microwaving.
A better idea is to get rid of the boxes.
Would be great if the world as a whole would just make an announcement, from X date, no plastic packaging would be allowed anymore. I'm almost certain that people would immediately and magically find other alternatives. They always do. There just seems to be too many vested interests to make a perfectly logical solution viable.Packaging could definitely be CUT DOWN.
