How can population be controlled?

Contraceptives? Birth control methods?
These are all I could think as of now. But these things will not work always since there are still people who doesn't accept these things, especially religious groups/people.
You need to start the focus on the two countries with the most out of control populations, namely India and China. On the plus side, as these countries continue to embrace capitalism, they are noticing a decline in their population rate. You see when women have to work all day full time hours to make money, they have less time for procreating
Seriously, just like Japan or Germany or any other industrialized country, our life styles of full time work for both men and women is simply not conducive towards keeping the population sustained.Death rate begins to exceed birth rate, which, while sounding somewhat morbid, is nevertheless a good thing overall.

An even split (if you have a stable population) is best. Having a stable population and then seeing deaths outnumber starting to births is a bad thing. Leads to a little something I like to call extinction.
With six billion people in this world, if the worldwide death rate does exceed the birth rate, even at a pace of 2% per year for a decade or two, that still would leave 60% of the population, roughly 4 billion people. In other words, a hell of a lot. Extinction only becomes a concern if the worldwide population falls below 250 million.
But mother nature knows this, hence the black plague and the Spanish Flu.
World wide population control has gone beyond containment. There is humane world-wide containment method. Although in Australia, it has been predicted that the population will reach close to 50 million people in the next 30 years, this seems to have put the current Government into panic as they believe there is no adequate amount of resources available for such a number. Apparently, the Government is planning to heavily control the inflow of immigrants into the country.
There are tons of unethical methods. proper education of over population consequences is an ethical solution, but you cannot force someone to not have kids it is their choice

Pretty good post overall. I think countries like the US need to stop allowing people [cough]octomom[/cough] who can't support her family without welfare to use doctors to help birth more children. Unfortunately, it seems that the more intelligent people don't procreate as much as their opposites.
I think China's policy is good to some extent in controlling the population. But, there is a major drawback. In the future, they are eliminating the concept of uncles, aunts, brothers and sisters. In the end, the family tree would not grow, it will just seem to narrow down!
That's the point. They're trying to reduce the population to a manageable level made up mostly of working males with a few breeding females to maintain it.
If modern and sustainable techniques and standards for agricultural activities were universalised, the Earth could support a population of well in excess of thirty billion.

There was a movie out a couple of years ago about the world being unable to reproduce until finally one woman got pregnant. Was a decent movie if anyone can remember it.
I'm interested to see what affect pharmaceuticals have on the ability for people to reproduce in the future. Especially with the levels present in our water supply.

yeah, wait until 2050 when the population is suppose to level off and begin declining thereafter.
The Free Market. As population grows, there is a demand for more resources, and thus they become more valuable. This naturally raises prices on goods, and discourages people from having more children. The larger the population, the larger the effect. States can intervene with this natural process by intervening in the economy, thereby growing population to unnatural sizes.
How about limiting the child tax credit to two kids? Then how about actually ADDING a small tax for each additional child after the second one, and make contraceptives free for households below a certain income level?
