extending the benefits probably encouraged people to sign up who had run out?

jobs exist... people just don't want to take a shitty job

stats came out that many would prefer the nearly two year paid break to actually working...

subsidizing unwanted behavior encourages more of it

The moral hazard of unemployment benefits (especially when they were extended) certainly plays a role in these numbers as does the minimum wage, uncertainty of policy, regulations, and tons of other factors.

Incentives are often just underlooked in today's economic analyses, which is part of the reason we find ourselves in this mess.

sadly true.. one must presume the motive of the left for extending benefits is a good one. But one which too often yields perverse results.

Affirmative Action is the same way... Senator Moynihan got pegged a racist for calling the system out for the destructive force it is.. Senator Webb (a dem for lord's sake) recently called for the end of affirmative action. It has the perverse tendency to help those minorities (notice I didn't say blacks...AA applies to all non-whites) who need it least. I knew many students of color from wealthy families who got diversity scholarships etc etc...

Let's try another BIA... the Bureau of Indian Affairs has been the single most harmful entity for native populations. It infantilizes them as do many gov't entitlement programs without regard to recipients...
