NJ Assembly passes gay marriage bill- goes to Christie

The New Jersey Assembly voted in favor of legalizing gay marriage in the state, sending the bill to Governor Christie now. The Governor has previously promised he would veto and likely will.

I still think the people should vote on it. That is what we did in Kentucky.

Well democracy does rule, but why should people who are not gay decide on how people who are lead their lives?

It is all about changes being shoved down people's throat. Even for something that I favor. I like it being voted on. It seems to me that when new laws are passed by the people there is less "blow-back".

You could ask why should people that don't drink decide drinking laws? Because they have to live with people that drink. One law we have here bugs me. If my son/daughter-in-law punches me it is assault. If I punch him/her it is a hate crime. And that makes the penalty much worse.

The people need to have more say in their daily lives and not leave everything up to a bunch of old farts with an agenda.

I really think it would help some of the resentment against government.

Well obviously it's much worse dealing with a heavy drinker, because you might happen to meet them in the streets, or even on the road driving like mad. But two men or two women walking hand in hand out of a wedding? I don't think it's gonna be so dangerous.
It would be a hate crime if you punched a person because of their race, religion or sexual orientation, but that needs to be assessed and proven before any authority can charge you for it.

I agree. But does a gay marriage necessarily effect the straight couple who lives across the street from them?

It may or it may not. Much of it depends on the couples. And how much "in your face" is going on.

Then shouldn't homosexuals be able to demand a vote on straight marriage? I mean, if they find the woman and the man across the street provocative, both parties will find themselves demanding morality from the state they live in.

Sure. I have no problem with putting straight marriage to a vote.

I am willing to live by the same rules that I wish others did. I trust people voting more than I trust the "sell out" crowd in any capital.

Haha, it would be entertaining I guess if a government suggested a vote on something I assume majority of people see as a human right for themselves when they're in love. :giggle:

Well I understand voting for things which matter to someones personal life, but I don't see gay marriage as part of that. No one will be forced to attend a wedding they don't wish to.

I do not attend anyone's wedding anymore. I have not been to one in years. I tell them I need to stay home and shave my head.

That is a bad idea. We should not allow individuals to vote on something that should be a fundamental right for all.

We would not allow a state to vote for making African Americans slaves again or to disallow women the right to vote.

This should be no different.

I like Christie a lot and truly hope he does the right thing, though he likely will not.

I disagree. We may not always agree on what is a right. I have some neighbors that believe since they pay rent they have the right to blast music all night. I believe since I own my place I have the right to sleep at night. There are rights involved. Someone had to decide which of us was right.

Well of course if you're a disturbed while sleeping on your own property, that is not allowed and you even have the right to involve the police. But I don't understand how this can be equal to a gay couple walking out of a church happily married.

The point was about not everyone agrees on what are rights and what are privileges. And most only see one side of it.

The other side can't understand why you feel that way.

Too many automatically assume that everyone will agree with them. That is why so many presidents claim the country agrees with them. But who do they talk to and hang out with?

Playing music all night is not a fundamental right. Marriage is.

We would never allow the people to decide if interracial marriages should be legal. This is no different.

Okay, so that makes Comet's point very valuable. Should we start voting where people of a certain race can be, like South Africa's apartheid. Since we know racism is an issue among people out there? Should we allow people who have completely insane ideas about how society should be have a vote? I think elections are sufficient for that, to be fair.
