President Obama has cleared 17k more troops to head into Afghanistan. They are going to be there for years. His administration has been very adament in saying that this is not a "surge."

If only we weren't in Iraq, would probably would have been done Afghanistan by now. This war ain't over by a longshot.

I suppose the good news is that we are also asking the rest of NATO for help but nobody expects much.

At least he's willing to send the troops were they are needed. I was worried that he'd refuse to dispatch new troops anywhere.

I've heard that the Taliban is starting to make a serious push into the country. Some extra boots on the ground (and the fire support they'll bring) will probably put a stop to that. We also could use a little extra muscle in getting the warlords to play nice and cement the government.

While I agree we should have had more troops in Afghanistan from the start, unfortunately with no clear withdrawal from Iraq, it also means an increased amount of spending in Iraq. IT doesn't look like they are willing or able to pay for their own reconstruction.
