He arrives at the convention with a mission; for his is the crusade of the common man. He comes with a long list of grievances. He has a large agenda, for his is the democratic party; the party of inclusion, the party of consensus and coalition, and, ultimately, the party of compromise. All must be accommodated; every dissident faction appeased. It is an impossible task. Still, he is undaunted. Armed with pamphlets and posters, he becomes a tireless advocate. He is strident, arrogant and argumentative. He takes on all comers. The party parades out the old war horses. One after another, in speeches and diatribes, they point the accusing finger at the excesses of the Republicans, who after eight years are now completely unmasked. It is the age-old conflict between the rich and the poor, the have’s and the have not’s. "It’s time for them to go!" - they cry. Arm-in-arm they stand united behind the party leadership. He shouts and cheers - waiving his rainbow banner - and sings: "Happy Days Are Here Again."
