Sept 11 Civilian Hearing vs Military Tribunal?

It would appear that Obama has finally decided (after lots and lots of dithering) that the hearing of the Sept 11 GITMO detainees will be a civilian one in New York. Families of the victims and also ex Mayor Rudy Giuliani in New York are very upset with this as they feel that it will open up all the hurt and anguish from scratch, draw the case out for an unnecessary long period of time, not to mention the defense lawyers creating martyrs out of the detainees and the media having a field day over it all. They feel that a very swift hearing by Military Tribunal would be much more appropriate. Wonder what everyone's views are on this?

My view is they should never set foot in the US. They hate this country and want to destroy it. Why should they have the rights they openly hate.

I have not thought about that in that way. That is really true. Military tribunal should take better care of that anyway, and possibly also be more fair, as it was a military act on their side.

I don't think it matters. Probably civilian.

Their rights must be respected, Dodge and Dean, because if they weren't, for the precise reasons you provided, it would defeat the entire point of holding their trial in the first place. It would be placing arbitrary judgement and the trial would be a joke.

Let me put it in more basic terms, though i reckon you get it.

INNOCENT UNTIL PROVEN GUILTY.

The trial should be held in DC or somewhere that didn't have any direct experience of 9/11, such as the East Coast or The South. When it's in NY city, just a few blocks away from the remains of the WTC building, judgement will be likely be clouded by emotion.

INNOCENT UNTIL PROVEN GUILTY is fine for those that believe in it. But means nothing for those that want to destroy the very foundation of this country. I would have no problem with them announcing a time and place in this country to release those fellows. Just give everyone 24 hrs. notice so they could be greeted properly by our citizens.:D

Isn't the very foundation of the country freedom, democracy and fairness?

If we keep giving terrorist the same rights as our citizens there will be no country. As for the trials Obama and AG holder have already said they "will be found guilty". And that even if found not guilty Obama can have them held forever. So this is a show trial. Why do it?

I got most of this on
This Week with George Stephanopoulos this morning.

Just another way for obama to help his terriorist friends.

Putting them away for life after a show trial?

Yeah, you know, i'd do that to my friends any day! Huge favour, they'd really thank me for my help.

I think we can safely put that argument aside.

Totally agreed. I agree with the victims as well who say that it would be like reliving everything over again. I also like your suggestion to let them go free for a proper greeting by everyone. How on earth did they get allowed into the US though?
