I do not think there should be special laws that apply to a hate crime ( especially bad punishments ) just laws that that apply to the situation at hand

for example if a white neo nazi curb stomped a african-american i dont think he deserves a worse punishment then if he curb stomped a white guy

If it is the same circumstance I agree the punishment should be the same. But if the white guy went "hunting" for a black guy to stomp he should get a little something extra.

Hate crimes ARE worthy of special treatment. If I go bash a guy just because he is black/gay/muslim/croatian/whatever group that is a crime that might not have occurred otherwise, and it is a particularily invalid motive for a violent crime. You only need to look at countries where hate crimes are endemic to see where failing to nip that kind of behavior in the bud can lead to.

We imprison per capita, the most inmates in the world, second is Russia, and then Rwanda.

What we need is to end the war on drug users, up the war on drug suppliers, incarcerate you (j/k), and then make prisons expensive. It is the capitalist way. I guarantee that if it costs more to incarcerate, imprisonment will dissipate. I have been in prison (Angola, 1968, so I think I have perspective on this). It is simply a vacation to those that are most loathed by society, and a nightmare to those that are caught up in the treadmill. To send more petty offenders to harsher sentences is insane.

Sorry to disagree, but race is a factor, and to increase our standing as the most punitive country in the world doesn't help. How about you join those that are trying to reduce crime instead of increasing punishment. It is the capitalistic way.

you assume I am talking about prisons, I am talking about actually severing a sentence like doing manual labor something like chain gangs except more productive, they will still serve their prison sentence except there will be no rest, this may seem to take away business from private industry but as a capitalistic economy we should be moving in the direction of high skilled labor vs. low skilled labor and how do suppose race factors into this
Yes I believe we should reduce the crime rate and also punishment but that is not possible with the not so utopian society we live in
(our government has gone about this the wrong way- you are right about the drug suppliers)
When man has no envy or enmity for his brother then we can go to what you said but probably that won’t even be necessary

I don't really have much to say on this subject right now. I see nothing wrong with "chain gangs" as long they are used for actual work and not "abuse". We have prisoners that work picking up trash on the roads and maybe a little weed-whacking. But they ask for that instead of sitting in jail for weeks or months.

Of course we will never see our biggest crooks working beside the road. They are too busy trying to get reelected.;)
