Turkey steps up Syria shelling as invasion of Afrin looms - BBC News

So far...
No Turkish troops have crossed the border but an all out artillery assault is underway.
Local Kurdish fighters say they've taken out a tank coloum that tried to cross the border.
Russian forces in full retreat though Russia denies this officially.
Syria says it will shoot down any Turkish warplanes that attempt airstrikes in Syria.

Airstrikes have begun.
Russia no longer denying that they've withdrawn most of their forces.
Turkey claims it has been open about it's operation but Syria claims they've not been consulted.
Turkish ground forces scheduled to cross the border on Sunday.
Syria considers this an invasion of Syria rather than a targeted strike of Kurdish forces.

Here's the chance to show the world whether the US can be trusted to support its friends - who do NOT include Erdogan!

Syria offensive: Turkish troops 'capture villages' in Afrin - BBC News

Turkish forces claim to have taken a number of small villages along the border.
Kurdish media and observers claim Turkish gains have been tentative and that Kurdish forces have pushed back Turkish forces.
Egypt and Iran join Syria in condemning the invasion.

If Syria decides to start shooting back (and frankly I don't see the Turks stopping with the Kurds and I suspect Assad agrees so the shooting may happen) then this is going to blow up into a major regional war with the 2 biggest NATO militaries on opposing sides.

Which two? Syria is NOT in NATO.

Syrian forces are cooperating with Kurdish forces and helping them move troops and equipment thu government held territory to outflank Turkish forces.
Syrian forces have not yet openly engaged Turkish forces despite Assad's warnings.

Seems the Turks are bogged down at the border. 4 days of fighting and they've hardly advanced, the Kurds even retook 2 border villages and are hammering Turkish border towns almost as hard at the Turks are Syrian border towns. Maybe the Turks bit off more than they could choow?

This keeps up, I wouldn't be surprised if the Kurds start pushing into Turkey.

It remains to be seen.

The thing I found funny about all this was that certain Germans were getting all hot under the collar because the Leopard Tanks they sold to the Turks were being used in the Turkish vanguard.... they wanted the Turks to cease using those tanks...I mean WTF!!

The SDF is Western backed, Turkey going after the SDF to justify a land grab (which is why Assad is so annoyed, he knows the Turks aren't giving anything they take back to him) is going to piss off the West and be viewed as a backstabbing to NATO. Once the UNSC meets (especially if the Russians side with the West considering the FSA is going after the SDF and Assad both) things could get really interesting. Worst case scenario, NATO civil war.

Kurds asking where Assad is after he made a big stink about shooting down Turkish warplanes.
