Unemployment numbers .... which numbers can we trust?

Getting the exact unemployment number is virtually impossible since everyone would basically have to be asked. Furthermore, there can be different definitions of what it means to be unemployment.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics number is generally accepted as being lower than the actual unemployment as it does not account for those who have quit looking for work because they couldn't find anything.

Actually the formula for that determination is publicly known and is actually taught in most college micro and macroecon classes. I used to know it, but have forgotten the exact numbers added for the number. If you Google it you are bound to come up with something.

U6 is best when it's significantly higher (like now) and U3 is best when they seem to match. The other indexes have their uses depending on what you're looking at/for.

They are. They use the U3 as 9+% unemployment looks better then 15+%.

Sort of... As I said, the U6 or True Unemployment is the better system when it's significantly higher as it represents the unemployed as opposed to just the unemployed looking for work. The U3 becomes the better system when the 2 indexes are closer as the U6 would exaggerate the unemployment numbers when they are low. For example the U6 would make 1% unemployment look like 8% unemployment.
