Deconstructing Government: the post office

Now they're back asking for billions in bailout from the federal government. Why isn't this causing screeching and whining like the bank bailouts (part of which were paid back) did? It's the same money taken from the taxpayers - right? They operate at a loss partly because of their over-compensated employees.

The post office is one of those anachronisms dear to the hearts of lleftwingers, because it means millions of votes, lots of patronage, and one more government monopoly. It should have been disbanded decades ago in favor of private enterprise. Now that we have email and other net services, it's completely ridiculous that this hundreds year old institution still exists. It needs to be shut down in an orderly way.

UPS and FedEx aren't going to be sending that birthday card to grandma's farm. ;) The USPS isn't nor ever has been about profit, like the military, police, firefighters, etc. it's all about service. Not everything can be for-profit if you want the American people to have a good life.

If there is a demand for that, just as if there is a demand for anything, the market will supply it. One tires of leftwingers' apparent genetic inability to grasp even the most fundamental economics.

The USPS isn't nor ever has been about profit, like the military, police, firefighters, etc. it's all about service. Not everything can be for-profit if you want the American people to have a good life.

That's ANOTHER thing - the way the leftwing brain TOTALLY shuts down on the issue of profit. Profit is PRECISELY the spur which provides good service and low prices in a free market, compared to the slow, dumb, backward, indifferent, inefficient, overpriced, anachronistic shoddy service of government monopolies.

The USPS is not needed- private sector alternatives can easily replace it (even to grandma's farm- it might be costlier but another alternative could be she has to go to the closest town to pick it up, but even then, is it so bad?). Besides, regular mail is dying a slow death anyway just as newspapers are.

While there is some good research behind it and good alternatives using this left-wing bashing that Patrick uses doesn't do anything other than boil the blood of other political superfans such as himself. Want to really change things (or even change people's minds)? Be respectful and cut out the idiotic bashing- it only hurts your case. And yes, there is research behind that too- alienating people doesn't work.

I'll bash all I want, thank you. I'm furious at the stupid arrogant fools who have been destroying this country for a long time. There's no dis-alienating leftwingers - a zealous dedication to irrationality is their religion.

You keep bashing- you won't solve anything though.

What won't solve anything is your warm milk brew of "it's everybody's fault". :p
I never said it is everybody's fault, just that it was the fault of the GOP and Dem officials of the time (for the most part), the Fed, and other entities. Not everybody though.

Is there anybody who actually still uses the US Postal Service? I know that I sure don't. I haven't bought a stamp in years. My bank pays my bills, I ship packages with Fed Ex, and I email personl letters. Everything I see in my mailbox goes straight in the trash can.

Fed Ex and UPS are way better at shipping packages, and I am sure a private company would be better at regular mail too, for those who still actually mail such things.

I say, let the Post Office wither on the vine.

UPS and FedEx aren't going to be sending that birthday card to grandma's farm...............

How can you say that? If the Post Office dissappeared you're darn tooton' UPS and Fed Ex would make a buck by picking up the slack and filling the void. Its called having business sense, something that the Left squashes - hence your ridiculous statement.

And besides, they already have flat envelopes that you mail at a flat rate.

Ya, are you going to pay $200 S&H for a Christmas card to cover the fuel they'll have to use to make the delivery?

I take it you don't use Fed Ex much.

Where the heck did you come up with $200.00?

Why do Liberals always deal in hyperbole and never deal in facts

Try shipping a single item on a 250 mile round trip and calculate the fuel needed then compare that to current prices. It's called logic, try it sometime.

Its not called logic, its called called stupidity. You can buy a flat Fed Ex envelope and mail it for about $20 anywhere in the US.

LOL! What a maroon. Instead of concoting imaginary prices in your head, how about going to the Fed Ex store and seeing that they charge.

I've seen a lot of stupid posts in my day, but that one was definitely in then Top 10.

FedEx doesn't do everyday mail, the cost is prohibitively high. Unless you want to provide high speed internet access to 100% of the country the USPS has a purpose.

Unless you think FedEx and UPS are going to spend the 3 days it takes for a single mail delivery at the bottom of the Grand Canyon. :giggle:

Okay, once more for the mentally challenged.........

You can buy a flat Fed Ex envelope and mail it anywhere in the USA for about $20.

Is there something about that you don't get? Am I using words that are too big for you? I'll dumb it down even more if you want.

And besides, as I already said: If the Post Office dissappeared UPS and Fed Ex would make a buck by picking up the slack and filling the void. Its called having business sense

I love how you sidestep the issue every time I prove you wrong.

For the third time: If the Post Office dissappeared UPS and Fed Ex would make a buck by picking up the slack and filling the void. And they would no doubt offer competitive prices.

You have lost this argument dude. Quit while you're behind.

You still haven't explained how a $20 flat rate will cover fuel costs, I'm not the 1 dodging. ;)

David, gas costs are something that will be relatively uniform between the companies. Fedex will pay within a certain deviation of what UPS pays or what USPS pays- its not like USPS gets free gas. Taxpayer money is still money that it costs the end users.
