Deconstructing Government: the post office

David, gas costs are something that will be relatively uniform between the companies. Fedex will pay within a certain deviation of what UPS pays or what USPS pays- its not like USPS gets free gas. Taxpayer money is still money that it costs the end users.
Who else would do the "franking" thing for the government people?

The post office is just one more government agency which gives out benefits as if it were 1970, not 2011, ie, both defined benefit pensions plus paid retiree health care, both long gone in the overwhelming majority of private sector workers. In fact, it's keeping up with that that is the reason they want $5 billion. Outrageously, they want to tax people who don't have those benefits any more to keep making plutocrats out of people who just drop letters off.

Ya, are you going to pay $200 S&H for a Christmas card to cover the fuel they'll have to use to make the delivery?

I can overnight a large package (a box that originally held six gallons of windshield washer fluid) from Massachusetts to Arizona for less than $200. Absurd hyperbole undermines your argument.

Yes and does FedEx or UPS handle the same amount of rural , 50 mile trip for 3 stops mail that the USPS does?

FedEx doesn't do everyday mail, the cost is prohibitively high. Unless you want to provide high speed internet access to 100% of the country the USPS has a purpose.

Unless you think FedEx and UPS are going to spend the 3 days it takes for a single mail delivery at the bottom of the Grand Canyon.

The postal service has made all customers subsidize the weirdos who want to live in the middle of a wilderness, and expect toi pay the same rate. There's no reason at all why that should be the case, and in a privatized system, they'd pay what they deserved to pay.

USPS only does that because the rest of us subsidize it to make it happen. It is arguably not necessary. But don't take my word for it- let the price mechanism figure it out. If the cost is too high for home delivery, the people can go to the nearest fedex or town center or whatever and pick up their mail. It really isn't a big deal and would save everyone a lot of money. Heck, even the USPS doesn't deliver to some of the most rural areas (there are a few small towns near where my parents live where mail is only delivered to one spot in the town and everyone goes there to pick it up).

There is a cost to convenience- that needs to be remembered.

I never thought about THAT part of it before. Good point. Its like, people who want to live in the ar tic wilderness can expect to pay a lot of money for basic supplies to come in, right?
