Are you cutting back, and how?

I'm eating out less, and when I travel, I stay in one place for a while, as this tends to be cheaper. Are the rest of you doing anything?

1. Never eat out.

2.Combine trips to town.

3.Have not traveled in over 15 years.

4.Water my vegetable garden out of rain barrels.

5. Changed light bulbs to new low energy type.

6.Only cool one room with AC. Sick wife must have AC and her Oxygen machine.

7.Try to get up at sunrise and go to bed shortly after sunset to save power.

8.No land line phone.

9.No credit cards and pay cash for everything.

I can probably cut down more, but have never been a big spender. I only keep one credit card for travelling. I cut down on travel this year. I find if I get too focussed on cutting down, that it works in reverse. So I don't fuss too much, but always watch it however.

I have no choice. We are in "survival" mode already.:(

I've just come back from Poland today. They have a high purchasing power parity there - which means you get more for your five bucks. I managed to live on about 200 zlotys over four days (excluding hotel and journey, but including meals, transport etc). That's $64.31 USD.

Spending more if anything. I guess I should probably cut back a bit! Ah well, I'm a sucker for nice clothes and expensive electronics.

Isn't that just true? Immediately when a thought appears that you should be saving, there is the wicked self that needs to spend, or worse, all of a sudden you get extra bills for taxes or ones you did not even think about. That has happened to me so many times. I find I save more by not saving, than making a conscious effort, if that could make sense at all! :)

You may "outgrow" that kind of spending one day if you live long enough. Life has a way of teaching us unwanted lessons sometimes.:)

If you think you might have a few dollars left to play on, you may have forgotten something.

*muses* The Government can do something about it that doesn't involve enhancing their power over us, indeed, would decrease it...

They could reduce or stop spending your hard-earned cash on killing people abroad, and give you a nice little tax break. V?ila. Instantly available money to pay your bills, clothe yourself, feed yourself etc.

I'm not sure what you mean but I'd rather kill my leaders once than have to kill others millions of times.

I know you probably will never understand why I feel that way. And I hope you never do.:(

I would rather kill them "abroad" than have to kill them here.
Totally agreed. Keep them out of the US not only by killing them abroad, but having the opportunity to gather intelligence in their backyard. Much more reliable and timeously than the ones that can be obtained from within the US.

Getting back on topic....pretty much the main things I do are:

1. Cut back on outside entertainment (movies,bowling,e.g.)
2. Eat out less
3. Drive the SUV less, especially for long trips.

I find the moment that I try and save, that I get to spend more. If I don't think along savings lines, I automatically spend much less, as I am not much of a spendthrift in the first place, also do not maintain a high standard of living. I always spend much less than what I make. Only have one credit card that I only use for travel. My finances are perhaps too simple and transparent.

Honestly, it's hard to cut back expenses these days since prices of necessities are getting higher here in our country. That includes fuel, which is now nearly a dollar per liter:eek:, food and electricity. But I manage to cut back a little on my vices just to buy this computer when my laptop died.

In Britain, both petroleum and diesel cost over a pound. And the Great British pound has a good bit more parity than the US Dollar.

This oil business stuff is controlled by crooks in my opinion. From top to bottom they are "playing" with the numbers. Every year just at time for the "longest yard sale in America" the gas prices go up all along route 127. But always go back down on the following Monday. Strange how "the market" just happens to do that year after year.
