Iran dismisses U.S. offer of talks, says Washington broke last deal

LONDON (Reuters) - Iran hit back at a U.S. offer of negotiations on Thursday, saying Washington had violated the terms of the last big deal they agreed, the 2015 nuclear accord.

U.S. President Donald Trump pulled out of that nuclear accord - which curbed Iran’s atomic activities in return for sanctions relief - in May, saying it did not go far enough.

The U.S. special envoy for Iran, Brian Hook, said on Wednesday that Washington now wanted to negotiate a treaty that included Tehran’s ballistic missile program and its regional behavior.

The problem is that the agreement was pretty one sided. We eased sanctions and pressure. They could without violating the agreement build weapons or a weapon program within a decade.

What change? We are a super power. If Iran wants sanctioned eased they either comply or live with the sanctions.

Who knows what change....diplomacy is an inexact and ephemeral concept. The point is diplomacy is no longer an option which generally leaves far fewer and less attractive options. I do not like or terust Iran but these emotions should not decide world affairs, especially those concerning possible violence.

We have the option of sanctions. Diplomacy is still an option. What is not an option is a path that allows Iran to develop a nuclear weapon without violating the agreement. Of course, our biggest bargaining chip left on pallets loaded into an unmarked plane in the night.

Most experts expected a nuke within 2 years. Pushing that back to a decade was an obvious win. Also the theocrats no longer have any real power, now they can point to our reneging on this deal to paint the current sane, secular government as weak and naive to win the next election.

We can't afford too many of those type of wins. How about we negotiate from a position of strength. After all, we are the most powerful nation on the face of this planet. How about we don't send pallets of cash to them in unmarked planes.

Because that's not negotiating. You negotiating on even terms and produce a deal all sides can live with. 'Negotiate from a position of strength' is code for bullying which is fine when dealing with some small nothing nation but will lead nowhere if dealing with an opponent that will tell you to fuck off and walk away.

No, we're not. You can destroy this nation by taking out 17 power substations. No power, communications, trade, military coordination, etc. 17 power substations and rebellion/invasion and it's all over. We're not even the richest nation unless you pretend the EU isn't a single economy. We've got the best military but unless you plan on fighting a war that means nothing as we come in behind developing nations on most other metrics.

If by pallets of cash you mean Iranian money the IMF stole... We didn't give them anything that wasn't already theirs and sanction relief was limited and tied to obeying the deal.

As I said, Iran is currently under the rule of what would be considered a moderately conservative government in the West. A government that has gone out of it's way to declaw the clerics and liberalize society. Breaking this deal gave the Iranian far right all the campaign ads they need to win the next election and send us back to square 1. It's idiotic unless you want a war with Iran in which case it's a clever way of manufacturing a CB.

Breaking the Iran Deal has placed the United States into the untrusted category and alienated both I ran and our Allies...this is very far from a "position of strength" and gives very few alternatives to the violence we had been trying to avoid. Soon enough the religious nuts will gain complete control and we have another Jihad staring at us.

Who cares? The Iran deal was a horrible deal. It was made with the US in the position of weakness. Is it your position that we, the United States of America should shake in fear of Iran? That we should make deals that are one sided just to keep them from threatening Jihad? I'm sorry that you, and those that think like you are afraid but this country, the United States of America doesn't bow to third world countries like Iran. If Iran attacks us, we should hit them back with the full force of our military. Sending a clear message that striking the USA is the last move of a country.

What I want is for people to understand that we are the United States of America. We aren't some third world country that has to beg. We had sanctions imposed upon Iran. We had pallets of their money that we flew out under the cover of darkness. Are you quaking in feat that Iran is going to hit those 17 power substations?

Every parent with a child in our military, every person who lives in the ME and everyone who values the word of the U.S. should care. Guns are not the only measure of strength.

Talking points do not a discussion or debate make, and the funds returned to Iran were not ours and miniscule in the grand scheme.

I see, so you are afraid of Iran and think that we, the United States of America should appease them so they will not choose to wage Jihad against us?

Obviously you do not "See" but have an affinity for placing your foul words into the mouths of others. It is unfortunate that discussion and debate are not your forte considering your position here.
