Lobbing for the constitution seems to be in all the citizens interest, it seems the government is a special interest lobby.
In the extended background checks fight, the NRA didn't lobby "for the Constitution". They lobbied for themselves, and their extremism in supporting gun rights. Everything can be brought to unhealthy extremes, and that's exactly what the NRA does. Here is their absurd statement:
"Today, the misguided Manchin-Toomey-Schumer proposal failed in the U.S. Senate. This amendment would have criminalized certain private transfers of firearms between honest citizens, requiring lifelong friends, neighbors and some family members to get federal government permission to exercise a fundamental right or face prosecution. As we have noted previously, expanding background checks, at gun shows or elsewhere, will not reduce violent crime or keep our kids safe in their schools.
The NRA will continue to work with Republicans and Democrats who are committed to protecting our children in schools, prosecuting violent criminals to the fullest extent of the law, and fixing our broken mental health system. We are grateful for the hard work and leadership of those Senators who chose to pursue meaningful solutions to our nation’s most pressing problems."
1. SO WHAT if the amendment "
would have criminalized certain private transfers of firearms between honest citizens, requiring lifelong friends, neighbors and some family members to get federal government permission to exercise a fundamental right or face prosecution." ?
First of all, the "honest" citizens may not always know how "honest" are the people they're selling their guns to (including friends, neighbors, & family members). They, as well as anyone, should be required to insure the American public that the guns are going into safe hands.
2. I waited 3 days to get my gun, while my background was checked. I have no problem with that. In fact, I'd be uncomfortable if they didn't do a thorough check, knowing other gun buyers might not be thoroughly checked.
3. The statement
"...expanding background checks, at gun shows or elsewhere, will not reduce violent crime..." is FALSE. Sure it would reduce violent crime. By keeping guns away from people who are criminal or dangerously deranged. Not everyone can buy a gun on the street.
4. No, the NRA is NOT working with the Congress to protect our children in schools. Quite the contrary, they are working to endanger those kids.
5. We the American people (90%) are grateful for the hard work and leadership of those Senators who chose to vote FOR the extended background checks bill.
6. Is the discomfort to a gun buyer of waiting for a background check as bad as the discomfort of the people killed by criminals who legally buy a gun, or the family & friends of those killed ?
