Black market cigarette market grows in NY after further increase in taxes

Amidst cigarette prices increasing to upwards of $12, the black market for cigarettes- loose and by pack has grown in NY state. Smugglers buy cartons from out of state and import them to sell- and they are selling a lot. This of course leaves NY state without revenue and makes their efforts to reduce cigarette usage less effective.

Just another example of how people always get what they want when there is enough demand.

Back in my trucker days I have hauled 40 foot trailers loaded from floor to roof with cigarettes. Every time we stopped for fuel or to eat we had to call the government. They wanted to know when and where we stopped.. We had to park in front. All because of the tax stamps on the smokes. Must be worse now due to prices.

drive up the cost of doing business and business reacts badly

wondered how long this would take

when one considers the demographic that is most likely to smoke this kind of entrepreneurship is no surprise
