Boston Bombings Confirms Need for Street Cameras

Two years ago, I wrote this OP ( ACLU Questions Chicago's Security Camera Network - I Don't.) criticizing the ACLU's idiotic opposition to security cameras on public streets. The recent bombing in Boston shows, once again, the NEED for these cameras which (monitored by security personnel) can not only catch bombers/terrorists while they set up their dirty work, and prevent the attack, but if the attack does go off, they can review the recordings, to then know who the perpetrators are, and have video evidence to convict them.

BUT NO. The authorities instead listen to the ACLU moronic loonies, and right now are asking the public for cell phone videos or snapshots taken at the time of the bombings. Shouldn't have to be asking for that, you guys! You should already have those videos, and if the cameras were in place, it's possible the bombings might never have happened. At the very least, you'd in good position to go after the dirtbags who did this, instead of fumbling about, as you are now.

When Big Brother gets too active most people don't like it - and beyond a certain point you'll need more people watching than doing anything else. As for simple photography, people are seldom very recognisable unless you already know who you are looking for.

I disagree with the ACLU 99% of the time. But I don't want to live in a fish bowl either.:(

The internet knows very little about me.

All I have to do (not that I would) is track your IP address. That would give me, with the right spyware, access to everything you do on your computer, everything you do online to say nothing of your physical address if you don't use a proxy. The internet and privacy are mutually exclusive concepts I'm afraid.

You would have to get the spyware on his computer, otherwise you wouldn't know what he is doing. You might be able to track the IP to a general location, but beyond that probably not much. And privacy can be a concern with the Internet, but if you know how to cover your tracks (and care enough to do so), you can stay stealth.

Anything you can scour up to oppose street cameras ? You may not want to talk about all the people getting killed because they're not there.

Well. I recently went on a quite interesting course about speeding - it cost me rather a lot, however. If Americans would stop playing cowboys with guns they'd need very few spy-cameras.

1. Well, they're not going to stop playing with guns, so I guess the spy cameras will remain needed.

2. Many, if not most, of the nutjobs who go around killing and bombing aren't even Americans, they're foreigners, many form the Middle East, starting with Sirhan Sirhan who killed Robert Kennedy. And if America would stop allowing so many foreigners into the US, we'd have quite a bit less need for the spy cameras.

That's because, I suppose, most of the people who go around the Middle East killing people are American. Take your people home and the world will be a better place.

You're not living in a fish bowl with street cameras any more than just walking around outside where everyone can see you. Same "fish bowl".
Big difference! If they are walking around on the street I know they are there. With cameras they can watch it days or weeks later. But then I value my privacy more than some others.

The omni present eye upon us seems a bit creepy.

Talk to our leaders, this nonsense has been going on for decades. We want it to stop too.
