In a blow to the Obama administration, the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) has concluded that the president?s economic stimulus plan created fewer jobs than expected and ?crowds out? private investment.

A new report the CBO released on Tuesday finds that the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act may have boosted the economy in the short run by sustaining some 700,000 jobs at its peak in 2010 but ?will reduce output slightly in the long run ? by between 0 and 0.2 percent after 2016.?

The report estimates that the total number of jobs the plan produced was far fewer than the 3.5 million the Obama administration predicted during the peak of spending.

The CBO estimates that the stimulus is responsible for sustaining between 600,000 to 1.8 million jobs during this quarter, which lowered the nation?s unemployment rate by as much as 1 percent.

In July, the conservative Weekly Standard estimated that Obama?s stimulus package had cost taxpayers $278,000 for every job it created.

There was no immediate comment from the White House on the CBO report, but officials haveinsisted in the past that the economy would have fallen into a depression without the jobs act..

In September, White House press secretary Jay Carney called it ?uncontestable? that the infrastructure projects the act created ?were very well managed, came in on budget or under budget and led to the creation of many, many jobs? that would not have been created otherwise.

CBO, a nonpartisan agency, has re-evaluated the stimulus every three months with varying estimates of the total price tag ? from $787 billion, up to $862 billion and now $825 billion.

The agency also has changed its model for the spending's impact on the economy, and the new calculations show that the act did less than originally projected.

CBO?s latest report reveals that the top-end decline of two-tenths of a percent is deeper than the agency predicted before the stimulus passed in February 2009, according to a report in The Washington Times.

At the peak of spending from July through September 2010, the American economy sustained between 700,000 and 3.6 million jobs, which lowered the unemployed rate between four-tenths of a percent to 2 percent, The Times reports.

An opinion piece in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution acknowledges that the stimulus failed to keep unemployment below 8 percent, as the Obama administration had projected, but blamed the discrepancy on a greater decline in the gross domestic prodcut than previously estimated.

?In short, in early 2009 we thought the economy had fallen off a ladder,? the article says. ?In reality, it had fallen off a six-story building.?

Employment is up. Stop lying.

Hey, thats the Congressiona Budget Office man, and the Senate is run by Democrats.

As for lying, unemployment is way higher today than when Bush left office. So is the deficit.

Get out of Fantasyland man; that socialist in the White House is a 100% failure. He is a moron, an imbecile, and he's going down in 2012

It takes a koolaid-soaked obamabot to hallucinate away the current conditions - everyone else can see the jobless, which when you include "discourage workers", ie, those who have given up trying to find work, is something like 16%; the people who have lost their homes; the people who have lost their retirement savings.

On obama's watch, the bad economic times have worsened, the debt has increased by trillions of dollars, the country is more polarized than ever before. Remember how obsessed the lib media was about the homeless during the relatively good times of the Bush era? Now, with their boy presiding over the Great Recession, they've lost their zeal for reporting on the subject.

Just what Obama did to make this happen ?

If you can figure out how exactly you came to this bad economic times , and what went wrong , then you will be able to come up with the solutions . but beeng "a koolaid-soaked" you will never be able to .

He inherited a normal recession. Then, he jacked up the national debt by trillions of dollars by, on the advice of his leftwing economic advisers, trying to "spend" his way out - the discredited keynsian economics which failed in the 1930s and has failed again. Then he scared employers out of hiring any workers with his health care takeover, his proposed colossal new carbon tax, his repeated banana republic-style end runs around congress by ruling by fiat (executive order), and other anti-business measures. He's broken his presidential oath to uphold the law by doing nothing to stop the illegal alien invasion, and taken states to court which out of desperation try to stop it themselves, like arizona and georgia, thus effectively exporting even more jobs. Now he and his congressional lackeys want to raise taxes by a trillion dollars, a CRIMINALLY STUPID thing to do in a bad recession.

Except for obama and his toxic combination of amateurism and leftwing extremism, the economy would have recovered by now.

I was the idea of trickle-down that got us in this mess. It's the party of don't tax and spend like crazy that shoulders a large part of the blame. For all their faults, the Dems pay for their spending so long as he Repubs don't throw up roadblocks.

It was Repub idiocy that got us into this mess.

Why don't you sit down with an economics book, and a history book, promise yourself that you will stop being a moron that people manipulate with stupid slogans, and read both books from cover to cover?

I suggest you do the same. Deregulation, the myth of trickle-down and attempts at Austrian economics is what has been bring this country down for the last 30 years.

THAT is a flat out lie.

First of all, the economy was fine until the Dems took over Congress in 2006. At that time, they forced lending institutions to give loans to unqualified individuals so that more poor people could own houses. Leading the way was Barny Frank, and the leading institution was Freddy and Fanny. But the collapse of the housing market due to these loans that began being defaulted on, caused by the Democrats, started the economy's dominos to fall.

What you just said is the biggeast propoganda lie ever foisted upon the American public.

And BTW: To use Obama's loginc, if he can blame his failures on a Republican Congress, then Bush van blame his problems on the Democrat Congress. The difference being, Bush would be correct.

You're an ignoramus. Among other pro-business actions, Reagan's deregulation efforts in the early 1980s set off a 15 year economic boom. You have no facts, no arguments, nothing but meaningless trite phrases like "trickle down" that some leftwing politician has ejaculated into your brain, knowing that that's all that's necessary to transform you into a robot that will work for its own destruction.

See that spike behind it? Ya, it's going down, albeit slowly.

And do you know why?
Its because of three things: Growth in government and thus government jobs which is bad; People who are no longer applying for unemployment because they have given up; And some people who have taken part time garbage jobs just to keep from starving.

Its false and fake. Obama is the all-time food stamp president and an utter failure.

You clearly have no idea what supply-side econ or Austrian econ (both different things) are. I will take it further and say that you don't understand basic economic principles hence your utopian delusion of an economy without scarcity or money.
