Disappointed?

Which one? I sometimes wonder whether the British Empire had been much much worse, as it always had the pretense of a democracy, and being civilized, but it has to have been one of the most treacherous of empires ever. With an enormous ability to double talk. I am almost convinced that this is how the English language developed so many words that have double and triple meanings, depending how they are used. Compare this with German and Dutch words that exactly describe what they mean. I believe words in the Russian language also have a variety of meanings and can also be fickle.

The Russian Empire. Come on, they taxed people for having beards!

lol wat? What world did your history teacher live in? :giggle:
Ahhhh .... so does this mean then that the taxes had been taken off the top of the salaries of the people, who by the way were not always paid for their services?

Services? They were taxed for every inch of hair they had. This was a mistake as not only were beards a sign of the Russian nobility but the Empire had a large Jewish and Muslim population as well. then there was the issue of serfs after everyone had built factories and freed their slaves. Suffice it to say, pre-USSR, the Russians were living in the 12th century while everyone else was in the 20th. Considering this, I'm not sure how anyone could call it a Dark Age. Even the fascists would have been a step up for crying out loud!

Not any longer, they were tortured and threatened. So half of them moved to America :)

Sounds very primitive? Like living in the dark ages?

It wasn't that bad. It was during the Stalin years but before and after?

Before was horrible, and after was even worse. Then people knew what Stalin was like and copied his ways. Disgusting history, and 1917 was really a sad for the Russians. They could've been so many other things, but Lenin had to go and f**k it all up.

The Russian Revolution itself wasn't so bad. It almost only took place around Moscow.

And apart from the Handlebar Fascist, most of it was horrendous (my dislike for Lenin, because of what he did to the socialists and his other atrocities) but better than the Empire.

Rather than saying how wonderful the USSR was (it was crap), i mean to demonstrate how bad the Empire was.

That's what I'm saying. Calling the USSR the Russian Dark Age is both sad and hilarious considering the despotism it replaced.

Depends on whose side you were. I also can't understand how anyone can say a Revolution itself wasn't that bad. Had to have been bad for some people at least.

I simply don't agree. What happened after was even worse, it became stone cold dictatorship. And not only that but look what Russia did to all its neighbouring countries. Russias powersickness and expansion, it completely destroyed Eastern Europe and Central Asian countries.

Well said, particularly the last sentence. I don't think they have recovered even to this day.
