Kids nowadays know more and more about things. So it's a good idea to prepare them from the future. Maybe not when they're eight but between ten to twelve years of age would be a good time to teach them about these things, because it is usually during this time that kids begin to notice changes in their bodies.
Since girls can actually become sexually mature (read: have their first period) as young as 8, I think it's smart to teach them a little, at least protection and periods.
Not to mention, there's a lot of 11 year olds lately having sex/getting pregnant.
On my very street a 9 year old boy forced a 5 and 6 year old girl to give him head. They (the girls) parents moved away but the boy is still here and I've made it PERFECTLY clear to him how I feel about it.
