In this excerpt from our recent "Turning Global Gains into Local Successes in the Digital Economy" event, RCP's Carl Cannon and Congressman Steve Chabot discuss Chabot's efforts to reform the Small Business Administration since taking over as Chairman of the House Small Business Committee.
CARL CANNON, REALCLEARPOLITICS: Rep. Chabot is here because he is Chairman of the House Small Business Committee. Let's get right to it. In 2015, when you took over the Chairmanship of the House Small Business Committee, you identified three challenges for small business: Access to capital, overregulation, and a tax system you said is far too complex. Let's evaluate your progress in these three areas.
REP. STEVE CHABOT: Very good, we're making some progress. Let me thank RealClearPolitics and Google [for hosting the event]. On these issues, on the tax front, we had the Tax Cuts & Jobs Act that was signed into law back in December, that I think is having a real impact on the economy.
I'd like to say it simplified the tax code more than it has, it did simplify it for a whole lot of Americans who aren't necessarily small business owners or corporate entities themselves. But for a lot of the public, it really is going to be a much simpler thing. There is a postcard, Americans are now going to be able to file their taxes on. Relative to small businesses, it still is relatively complicated, although much much lower.
I think that is already having a dramatic impact on the economy. We'll have to see how it works out long term, but right now it seems to be going quite well. We had a hearing yesterday, where we had a lot of small business folks come in and tell us first hand how it is affecting them, and for the most part, it is dramatically positive.
