Would you still follow the same religion if you were not born in it?

Simple question...what if you were born in some other faith? Would you somehow find your way to the one you are practicing or stick to the one you were born in? Are you practicing your religion by choice or simply by birth?

Honest replies please.

Yes, I go my own way, I don't have to follow what my parents think I should follow. I think we have the right to make our own decisions in life, since it's our life, not theirs. Yes, this is my honest reply, but I am currently following my parent's religion, simply because I've learn to believe in it, but I think people should believe in whatever they feel like. I think that pretty much sums it up, just follow what you want and you'll be what you want when you grow up. :D

Religion is nothing but it shows us the right way of living. I feel more or less every religion teaches same basic principles to be scared, honest, respect and help other and be kind to every living being. Though I have keen interest on knowing about different religions I prefer following my own religion and I don’t mind adopting rituals of other religion if they interest me personally.

I don't practice the same religion my parents do, Their Christian and I'm Buddhist because I like how the religion is about peace and helping for the better part of the world.

First of all, I would like to say I respect your decision.

But why did you convert to a Buddhist, when "helping for the better part of the world and keeping peace" are still all qualities a Christian may have? Did you simply think that Buddhist would be a better religion for you to follow, and you wanted to disregard what your parent's religion were? Again I'm not disrespecting your religion, I was just wondering because what you said still fits the Christian "criteria" :p

Only two honest replies! As for the rest I think they didn't get the question at all.

I did not ask anybody to propose a solution to follow any religion by choice. Why do you follow the same religion you were born in is the gist of my question. Answers please...

No, there are also parts of the religion that is not the same as the Christian religion and there are parts of the Christian religion that Buddhist don't agree with.

I probably would...but I'm an atheist. My parents are technically Christian, but organized religion was never a big deal for them. They thought it was the values that really mattered.

I migrated to my choice because that is what ultimately made a lot of sense to me. I think that I would have developed this belief regardless.

I do think that there is a lot of evidence to following the religion you were born into though. The first is the natural basis of any religion. The followers of the religion like it. They think it is the best. Otherwise they wouldn't follow it. This means that the kid will see all of the good and none of the opposition until they are much older. Basic confirmation bias.

For a larger example, I've heard a few interesting things from Russia. A friend of mine mentioned how little of a role religion plays there. An entire generation was raised without much religion during the Soviet Union. This generation and the next basically don't follow it much. It's just not a big deal from what I've heard.

I'll probably have to agree with gunned down,i am religious but i follow this religion because i believe in it,if i don't believe in it then i would've searched for other religions or faiths which could satisfy my thirst for questions and i wouldn't mind following another religion.

Well in some cases I probably would have not heard of any other religion or if I did, I could have been close minded depending on how I was raised.

While I'm not strictly religiously, I do tend to favor some Christian beliefs over others due to the way I was raised. However that's not to say I'm not open to new ideas, but for some reason that faith seems to make the most sense to me, even though I don't agree with it 100%.

Nobody should have religion forced upon them. Any religion that even preaches that is not worthy of following. Parents who force it upon their children aren't great parents.

Really, freedom is a simple concept, its unfortunate that many do not embrace it.

Yeah, parents really shouldn't force their kids to follow their religion, but sadly, we don't live in a perfect world. :( I grew up where my parents kind of "forced" me to become a Christian, but after going to church and all that, it's really not that bad.

However, I don't understand what you said about "Any religion that even preaches that is not worthy of following". I think just about every religion on this planet "preaches", because if it didn't, then what would the religion be about? So you're saying just because someone is preaching a religion it shouldn't be even considered a religion? That means your saying there should be no Muslims, Christians, Budhists (is that how you spell it? lol), etc..

I think you misunderstood my post. I meant that any religion that preaches being forced to follow it.

I still don't quite understand your post.. it seems that you're trying to say that if any religion preaches they are being forced to follow it? If that's what you meant, I still disagree, because what about the pastors in church that preach their religion? They probably chose to follow their religion, and no one is forcing them to follow the religion they chose to follow. The only reason they are preaching it is because they want to, for the sake of preaching. :D

If I still misread your post, I'd be ashamed of myself.. lol

I think he just means that any religion that goes out and witnesses isn't worth being followed. If it's a good religion, then it should be able to draw people in on its own merits. Otherwise, it's just a big cult.

Sorry if I'm missing it too.

I was born Melkite (greek catholic) but i had a time when i ventured out on my own and studied and read about other religions but I am now satisfied with my faith. I have friends from all religions and even from no religions. The one thing i share with all of them is that we all care about each other. This is called the brotherhood of man.

So many replies and yet no answers to the original question. May be people here have misunderstood it and think its a thread discussing people being forced into religions that are not their first choices!
