What do you guys think of the Obama Healthcare plan? Do you think it would be good or bad for the economy? I think it is too much like socialism, as if we are drifting away from our good old capitalist ideals.
I think it can be argued it is socialist- at least more so than the former situation. If it was socialist, it wouldn't suck.
It's a gift to the insurance companies (they just got 30,000,000 new costumers for free) made to look like reform. Classic case of bread and circus.

I agree with you on the other matter though, it is another case of corporatism.
That reference went over my headIf you'll excuse the pop culture reference, anything that's not a Frangi's wet dream is related to socialism at some level.![]()
That reference went over my head, but free markets are not socialism

I'm not much of an Obama person, being in the UK, I don't know his policies, but I think free health care would be awesome.
Ironically, history shows us that the market is a lot more efficient and cost-effective than the government at providing anything, including health care. More competition would certainly mean lower prices as well as more innovation in a country that already ranks at top (or very close to it) of medical innovation. Right now (without the currently "reform" bill,) the system still plays into corporate interests by favoring insurance companies by reducing competition. favoring certain consumers, and requiring certain policies. Most Americans could not afford a major medical expense, even with health insurance. They will be bankrupt; and those unfortunate to need long-term medical treatment will end up on the street. The greatest nation in the world should be able to afford the very best healthcare for all of its citizens. Need must it be so, for the greatness of a nation is not measured by its wealth or power, but by the way it provides for the welfare of its people.
Problem is the US wealth is gone and power is draining fast. Most Americans could not afford a major medical expense, even with health insurance. They will be bankrupt; and those unfortunate to need long-term medical treatment will end up on the street. The greatest nation in the world should be able to afford the very best healthcare for all of its citizens.
