I often think that future generations will be able to see how we were controlled by the mainstream media, firstly, by the lies we were sold, secondly by the volume of Government and corporate propaganda in the mainstream media, and finally, by what we were not informed of.
Like with the Hitler war afterwards, they will also wonder why we had resisted so little. We would be not only considered victims, but guilty as well because we had done so little to save ourselves.

Short answer: Theordore Roosevelt and Ronald Regan in my opinion were better Presidents than Abraham, however I'm not saying Lincoln was a bad leader at all.

I can understand Theodore Roosevelt, but why would you think Ronald Reagan would be a better President than Abram Lincoln?

Ronald Reagan was the one who declared war on terror in 1985. He subsequently used that premise to give himself, Government and the police, more power over the individual.

His foreign policy was to fight terrorism through terrorism. If they do it, it's terrorism. If the US does it, it's counter-terrorism.

He also increased substantially the national debts and practically destroyed the Unions.

So I guess Bush should have paid attention how to do that and still stay popular with the people? He did the exact same, but became one of the most unpopular Presidents in memory.

Well as Reagan ended on a high note.

Ah well, i suppose Reagan's propaganda was better then. ;)

Nancy consulted regularly with an astrologist, so possibly he always got his timing right. He was a nice man though, he came over with respect. Bush was a little on the arrogant side.

Upon thinking about it further I'm gonna have to say my favorite President is Lincoln followed by Washington, Theodore Roosevelt, Franklin Roosevelt then Ronald Regan. This may change of course.

How can you put Lincoln in that list? And don't say he got rid of slavery, it's still legal.

I'm also interested in an answer to this question. I don't understand why people are that taken by Lincoln. For me he was a "dark President" in dark times.

I don't know if he is the best president the US has had, however, I must say that I do admire Abraham Lincoln a alot. he is one of those men who endured big time but he came above it all.

I don't respect anybody that keeps slaves. I don't think they deserve my respect. And that certainly disqualifies them from being the best American president, in my eyes.

While I understand why many may consider Lincoln as one of the greatest presidents, it is also true that through the civil war he rejected states' rights and self-determination. Technically, what he did was not Constitutional either. I do see why some may see it as a necessarily evil, but personally, I think there were better ways of keeping the country together without a massive war. For that reason, I would not put him at the top.

I loath, not hate, loath the man. He leveled entire cities ("But not until I win reelection!"), overthrew 2 democratically elected and republican state governments replacing 1 (which had declared it's neutrality) with a military junta under a relative and otherwise trashed the Republic.

Necessarily evil my ass... "I have saved the Union by destroying the Republic." If the Republic must fall, what's the point of saving it?

The whole working class is oppressed. The truth is, the vast majority of black people are proletarian. And the vast majority of white people are proletarian. During segregation, however, they were to an even greater extent and indeed almost uniformly proletarian.

Also, since the US was even more of a fascist, racist police state than it is now, they were at even greater a disadvantage.

Still, people believe Abraham Lincoln was and is America's best president ever..

Just days after the nation honored the 200th anniversary of his birth, 65 historians ranked Abraham Lincoln as the nation's best president. Former President George W. Bush, who left office last month, was ranked 36th out of the 42 men who had been chief executive by the end of 2008, according to a survey conducted by the cable channel C-SPAN. - yahoo news

Yes, gotta love shitting on state sovereignty and suspension of habeus corpus...

That being said, before the Civil War it was "The United States are", today because of his action to build one nation from many it is "The United States is" when we speak of the US' activities.
.

We were one nation before Lincoln. We were just a nation that believed in liberty and local control of local affairs instead of totalitarian bureaucracy. Lincoln started the cancerous growth of the Fed in earnest.

Abraham Lincoln was a good president due to the way he was able to keep the country together, but he is not the best. That honor goes to the great Ronald Reagan who's principles led to the most prosperous period in this nation's history. Too bad the Obama administration is completely ignoring the ideas of Reagan and in turn destroying the country with socialism...

Yes... too bad Obama is ignoring Reagan's advise example of massive deficits...

To sum up my feelings of the man, I'll actually quote him, "To save the Union, I have destroyed the Republic."

Can you source that quote, please?

A well written essay. I'll quote the relevant part:

Lincoln saw as much and claimed, "I can't let them go. Who would pay for the government?" Lincoln knew who was in charge of the government he headed: "In saving the Union, I have destroyed the republic. Before me I have the Confederacy which I loath. But behind me I have the bankers which a fear." The South knew that it is their import trade that draws from the people's pockets sixty or seventy millions of dollars per annum, in the shape of duties, to be expended mainly in the North, and in the protection and encouragement of Northern interest. This is why the North could not let the South secede from the Union and would fight an enormously destructive and stupendously expensive war to prevent this. The North was enraged at the prospect of being despoiled of the rich feast upon which they have so long fed and fattened, and which they were just getting ready to enjoy with still greater gout and gusto. They were as mad as hornets because the prize slips them just as they are ready to grasp it. They would destroy the South to save it.

Far from being one of the best presidents, Lincoln was one of the worst.

Since the United States was, at the time, a confederation of states the various states had a perfect right to cecede from the union. Lincoln did not care a whit about the slavery issue, only the cessession issue as is shown by his freeing the slaves only in those states that were in rebellion against the United States.

Lincoln suspended individual legal rights, jailed newspaper editors he didn't like and suspended the rule of habeus corpus.

Sorry but good ole abe wasnt the best ever. He was a good president though because he wanted to preserve the union . He really didnt care about the slaves and even wrote a letter saying if he could he would ship them all back to Africa.
The best president (if there was one) was JFK because he dared to stand against war, even though it cost him dearly for his stance.

Without a doubt JFK.
Read "JFK and the Unspeakable: Why he Died and Why it Matters."

Yes it cost him his life 'cause the military (Curtis LeMay, shudder) industrial (Bell Hellicoptor, Brown and Root) complex were determined.

Lincoln belongs to the days when foreigners admired America and saw it as a source of hope. By going along with mass-mobilisation, alas, he destroyed the world he seemed to embody and transferred power from those who admitted they regarded other people as property to those who pretended they didn't and treated them like shit. That said, 'states' rights' that include slavery needed to be destroyed, and with all his hesitation, he did it well. He was, I'd guess, the last 'official' American who clearly stood for human decency, and that's not to be sniifed at.
